NEAR PLACES Udaigiri caves are located in Vidisha city. They are 5 km far from Vidisha.Udaigiri is a very beautiful place having 20 caves dating from 5th century a.d. These caves include Jain and Hindu caves.They possess fine figure sculpture the most interesting among them being the huge image of boar incarnation of Vishnu,some caves bear Sanskrit inscription in gupta character one of which is dated in gupta samvat 82 (A.c 401-02) and another in gupta samvat 106(A.c 425-26).Two of these mention the name of famous gupta emperor chandragupta II,that on cave stating that the emperor visited that spot during his conquest and the cave was made by Virasena the minister for war and peace. .On the top of the northern half of the hill lie the ruins of big temple and of a monolithic pillar.

HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE This Temple which was built in 11-th century A.D. was demolished in 1682 A.D. during the reign of Mughal King Aurangzeb and the mosque was erected on its site using the material of the temple. Most of the plasters,pillars and lintels used in buildings are carved in the styles of parmara temples, some of them contain Sanskrit inscriptions on one of the pillar is recorded the name of Parmara kings Naravarman(circa 1094-1133).Excavation conducted on the site by the archaeological survey of India in the year 1971-1972 and 1973-1974 brought to light a two metre high Adhishtham with seven steps on the southern side .It appears that the original temple was of considerable dimension approachable by high flight of steps on its three sides among the not worthy objects the figure of Mahisasurmardini standing eight arm Ganesha,dancing female figures.on the other side of the demolish temple the mosque stand.The mosque was known as Alamgiri Masjid.

History of sanchi Sanchi did not grow up at once. That it did not grow up on arise during the life time of any individual is evident from the monument of the place. Every yard of land here has its own historical significance. Cities like Budhha-gaya, Sarnath, Lumbini, Kusinara, and sravasti have been rendered sacred on account of the connection with the the Buddha. Sanchi does not lay claim to such an honour. No record is found in any Buddhist work of either Buddha or any of his chief disciples having visited Sanchi.
